Safety Culture Improvement

Safety Culture Improvement

In 2005, Accreditation Canada identified a culture of safety as one of their five patient safety goals for healthcare organizations. Like Accreditation Canada, the 9 + one program recognizes that without a culture of safety, efforts to improve performance and patient safety will be met with challenges, and as a result organizations may not see lasting results.

To address the importance of establishing and maintaining a safety culture, the 9 + one program begins with the implementation of the Culture Assessment Survey (CAS), a tested and highly reliable survey that measures performance in relation to six elements that support a patient safety culture.  The survey identifies areas of strength as well as opportunities for improvement that allow organizations to establish priorities for improving performance and patient safety.

While safety culture surveys have been likened to “describing the water to a drowning man; they tell you how bad things are but do little to help solve the problem” (Fleming, 2008, p.11), the 9 + one program provides practical tools to support its client’s efforts to improve their patient safety culture and performance.  The 9 + one program offers a comprehensive set of learning solutions targeting each aspect of the CAS so that when needs are identified solutions are readily available.
